History

Historical notes: Machattie Park, named for Dr Richard Machattie, was the brainchild of doctors Thomas Machattie and William Spencer, who also initiated the planting of trees along Bathurst's streets. The park was laid out in 1890 - 1891 on the site of the old Bathurst Gaol to the design of James Hine & Thomas Machattie, thrice major of Bathurst, who with Mr. Bassett and others proposed the former gaol site as a park.
