Statement of significance:

The theatre is historically significant as Dungog's earliest picture theatre, having been constructed in the 1930's. Known as the James Theatre, movies were screened here three times per week in 1953. The building is aesthetically significant as imposing Spanish style theatre building which makes a significant and important contribution to the township. The Dungog Community Centre, and picture theatre, has served as a place of entertainment and been a hub for the community since it was constructed in the 1920s. In recent years there has been a resurgence in the role of the theatre by the advent of the Dungog Film Festival, which sees many visitors descend on the town for a week of films, based in the building. This theatre is the only building of this type and style in the LGA and is considered rare at the local level. Very high integrity.

Description

Physical description: This is a large timber frame building with a later Spanish Mission façade treatment. The roof is corrugated iron with a prominent gable and pediment detail to the front façade. At the upper level there is a Juliette style balcony centrally placed over the main opening. The front is rendered in stucco and painted white in keeping with the style. The gable features a "Machicollation" motif.
Modifications and dates: The stucco façade and Spanish Mission treatment appears to be later, but is part of the building's character now.
Current use: Community centre and movie theatre
