Statement of significance:

Distinctive, individually designed, turn-of-the-century house. One of the earliest houses in the Fairfield West area. Large building with original high quality interior and external detail, including dichromatic brickwork. Representative of early agricultural activity. Significant for its association with Walter Stimson, an influential property holder and alderman.

Description

Physical description: Federation period brick house, sited on large corner block. Appears to be c1900 or earlier. Complex form. Corrugated iron roof in hipped sections with close eaves. Dichromatic brickwork. Redder bull-nose brick quoins around windows, and in segmental arch soldier coursing. Good facades on two street frontages. Main façade possibly on north side, now facing away from street. Separate bull-nose verandah roofs almost right around. Supported on turned timber posts with brackets. Double=hung windows, some with pressed metal hoods. Projecting stone sills with moulded under-sills. Corbelled brick chimneys with iron pots. Well preserved interior with original joinery and ceilings.
Modifications and dates: A number of minor skillion roofed enclosures and additions on corners. Recent addition enclosing verandah. On west side of building. Brick unfortunately painted, except for quoins. Brick paving. New sympathetic picket fences.

History

Historical notes: This house, built around 1900, was owned by Walter Stimson, prominent local politician and entrepreneur. Stimson was long-serving alderman on Fairfield Council, including four terms as Mayor. Stimson used the area around the house for growing grapes and citrus trees (FCC).
