Statement of significance:

The oldest extant railway buildings in New South Wales. Also one of the oldest groups of buildings in Fairfield City. Considerable historic and social significance as a record of the construction of the New South Wales railway system and the continuing role of the railway in the development of Fairfield. Good examples, in well maintained condition, of Mid-Victorian, Georgian style public buildings. State significance.

Description

Physical description: Group of brick railway station buildings with iron roofs: Stationmaster's residecne at northern end of Dale Street platform. Built in 1856. Gabled roof with four corbelled brick chimneys. Verandah on two sides, hipped concave to platform and skillion to Dale Street. Station building in centre of Dale Street platform. Built in 1856. Two hipped roofs with three brick chimneys, corbelled in same style to stationmaster's residence. Segmental arch heads to windows. Station buildings on The Crescent platform. Built c1878. Mostly gabled. Timber finials. Ventilator to small (southern) building. Brick chimneys with corbelling. Verandah with wrought iron framework, supported on cast iron columns to platform. Stone heads and projecting sills to windows.

Fairfield Railway Station Precinct comprises the earliest surviving group of station buildings in New South Wales. These buildings are well maintained and largely intact, the whole complex providing an excellent example of complementary design and apprearance.
Modifications and dates: Generally: brickwork painted, new roofing, Stationmaster's residence: Brick plinth and timber picket enclosure to verandah facing platform, skillion roofed corrugated iron and weatherbaord extension at south end of building, weatherboard enclosure to verandah facing Dale Street. Stationi building in centre of Dale Street platform: Skillion roofed weatherboard extension to Dale Street façade, awning over platform, openings for pedestrians in south-west corner of building. Station building on The Crescent platform: northern, gable roofed extension, 1940, in sympathetic style, three arhes to opening between two original buildings, awnings on both sides of the buildings (NT)
Further information: This site should be conserved. A conservation plan should be prepared prior to disturbance. This site should be placed on a S.170 Register.

History

Historical notes: This station, on the Granville to Liverpoll line, was completed and opened in 1856. The two buildings on the Dale Street platform are the original structures and are the oldest surviving railway buildings in New South Wales. (NT, Mu)
