Statement of significance:

SIGNIFICANCE - 1993: Of significance as one of the early major former coal mines in the district, which gave employment to the local community for many years.
The Gartlee mine was one of three in Teralba which contributed to the initial growth of the town.
It is associated, through its founder, with one of the leading local families.
With its remaining buildings, the site has archaeological potential, for possible exploration, recording and interpretation, along with the now almost forgotten early settlement adjoining the mine.

Description

Physical description: PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS - 1993:
Location: McEwen Street, a.k.a. Railway Street South
DESCRIPTION:
Most of the Gartlee Mine has been demolished, but the bath house, the stables, and a separate small office/cottage survive.
The bath house has brick walls and gable cgi roof.
The stables are attached to the NW corner of the bath house, and have brick walls, skillion roof and several doors facing north.
We were not allowed to inspect the interior.
The office/cottage was weatherboard with cgi hipped roof, but has been reclad with aluminium siding and Kliplock roof.
Most surviving buildings belong to the 20th Century
Modifications and dates: Most colliery buildings have been demolished.
A small cottage, (c1900) now used as workshop office, has been totally reclad.
The other existing buildings appear to have been built in about the 1920s.
Current use: 1993: engineering workshop

History

Historical notes: HISTORICAL NOTES - 1993: Opened in 1890 as Gartlee Mine.
Renamed Northern Extended Colliery in 1902.
Owned by Andrew Snedden, (whose house "A.S." is Item TA-11).
The mine was bought by BHP & later closed down. (when ?)

RECOMMENDATION - 1993: Include in a Conservation Area within an LEP. More information needed. With its remaining buildings, the site has archaeological potential, for possible exploration, recording and interpretation, along with the now almost forgotten early settlement adjoining the mine.
