Statement of significance:


	A classic Italianate residence of Sydney of the 1880s, Altona is an excellent example of the craftsmanship of the era, and symbolic of the aspiration of the middle class as well as the prosperous nature of the district at the time.

Description


Physical description:	A typical high Victorian Italianate asymmetrical house of stuccoed brick walls and slate low tiled roof construction. The house retains many of the architectural features including faceted bay windows, iron lace friezework to verandahs with the popular fern motif, elaborate classically-derived mouldings and eave brackets, tesselated entrance paving and iron palisade fencing.

History


Historical notes:	Purchsed as four lots from Johnston's subdivision in 1884 by Mattias Bothsmann, the house is the first in Sands Directory of 1887 with the name "Ellora". By 1890 its name is listed as "Altona". Bothsmann occupied the house until he died in 1902. It is currently used as a centre by the St Vincent de Paul Society (now known as Xavier House).
