Statement of significance:

Newington College is a major private school and many of its pupils have gone on to become leading professional and business men. It forms an important site for historical, social and aesthetic reasons.

Designer/Maker: Thomas Rowe
Physical description: The rusticated stone wall and large, treed grounds which face Stanmore Road are an important streetscape element for this area and they provide one of the few large, open spaces in the district. Stanmore Villa, the old Methodist Church and the Founders Hall are important elements within the grounds.

History

Historical notes: The College was founded by the Methodist Church in 1863, then being located at 'Newington' on the Parramatta River. In 1869 John Jones left his 13a estate at Stanmore to the Church and the school moved there in 1880. (Architect: Thomas Rowe). Enrolments increased rapidly and the school has been enlarged on many occasions.
