Statement of significance:

This is one of the best remaining examples of the villa estates which dotted the Municipality prior to its suburbanisation in the 1870's and 80's. Much of the site remains open as the grounds of Newington College.

Description

Physical description: This two storey villa is constructed of Flemish bond brickwork. The facade to Stanmore Road features two slightly projecting window bays, each of which has three, simple rectangular openings. The main door faces onto the Newington College grounds. The eaves have widely spaced brackets and there is a low moulded string below the windows. The verandah features cast iron detialing. Slate roof.

History

Historical notes: This was the home of John Jones* who bequethed Stnmore Estate to the Methodist Church in 1869. Jones had purchased the property from A.J. Liddington in the 1830's. The suburb of Stanmore was named after this estate. *History unconfirmed
