Statement of significance:

An example of a large, prominent and heavily stylised house built in the 1884 in the Victorian Italianate style, which has commanding extensive views. Original turn-of-the-century outbuildings are a rare survival. The house was built for Mrs L.J.Loxton,( widow of Thomas Loxton, an early alderman on the East St Leonards Council) in 1884, adjacent to the site of the North Shore Gas Company gas works. Setting, exterior and interior are of significance.

Heritage Inventory sheets are often not comprehensive, and should be regarded as a general guide only. Inventory sheets are based on information available, and often do not include information on landscape significance, interiors or the social history of sites and buildings. Inventory sheets are updated by Council as further information becomes available. An inventory sheet with little information may simply indicate that there has been no building work done to the item recently: it does not mean that items are not significant. Further research is always recommended as part of preparation of development proposals for heritage items, and is necessary in preparation of Heritage Impact Assessments and Conversation Management Plans, so that the significance of heritage items can be fully assessed prior to submitting development applications.

History

Historical notes: On the east extremity of property of Thomas Loxton in the 1890s, being acquired from James McLaren, the original grantee of one of the allotments provided for whaling in the 1830's. 'Adderstone' was built 1883-1884 for Mrs. L.J. Loxton, widow of Thomas Loxton (who was an alderman on the East St. Leonards Council). She occupied the house from 1887-1890, but the house had various tenants at other times. From 1898, on the death of Lucinda Jane Loxton, the house passed out of the Loxton family. George Holdship, a Sydney timber merchant, owned the house from 1913 to 1923 and changed its name to 'Craigielea'. In 1925 the 'Adderstone' estate was subdivided, and the house left standing on a battle-axe block.
