Description

Physical description: Two storey building with three shops facing George Street, gabled corrugated steel roof. Upper floor probably enclosed verandas, with corbels supporting brick balustrade coping. Shopfronts and visible interiors are modern. Part of the eastern and northern walls in solid brick with string course at original eaves line. Photo taken 1870 shows hipped shingled roof; no veranda at front. Traces of rear veranda.

History

Historical notes: A study by Shylie Brown in 2002 found that the site was granted to Capt. Anthony Kemp, who had arrested Governor Bligh during the Rum Rebellion. Macquarie rescinded that grant and awarded the land to Lt. Governor O'Connell in 1817. He sold it to John Ellison, an ex-convict. According to Shylie Brown, the building facing George St was erected in 1831 or 1832. After Ellison’s death in 1853 and a family dispute the property passed to William Byrnes in 1862 as a gift to his daughter Annie on her marriage to Dr. George Pringle. In 1910 it passed to Daniel Anschau, a tanner, and shortly afterwards, it was extended by the construction of shops extending to the frontage on George Street, which had been narrowed.
