History

Historical notes:

Mount Broughton was originally part of the estate of Charles Throsby, a well
known pioneer of the area beyond the Cow Pastures and particularly around the
Berrima District. Throsby built a small cottage at Mt Broughton in the 1820's
and another, larger homestead in 1856. He had previously built "Throsby Park"
at Moss Vale, which is still in the Throsby family. In 1862 Sir Henry Kater
bought Throsby's house at Mt Broughton along with 4,000 acres of prime
grazing land. The Kater family are famous for their pioneering work in
developing the Spanish-Merino breed of sheep, a strain of which is the basis
of todays Merino flocks in Australia. Much of their work was carried out at
Mt Broughton and on their other properties at Orange and Deniliquin. The
property passed to Sir Henry Herman Kater on Sir Henry's death in the 1890's
and Mt Broughton became the base for the Kater empire, which by that time
developed 12 sheep and cattle grazing properties and numerous commercial
properties in Sydney and Parramatta.
After Sir Henery Herman's death, the property was inherited by Sir Norman
Kater, however he was engaged in a busy medical career and won his knighthood
for his outstanding service as a surgeon during the wars in South Africa and
the Great War. He returned to Mt Broughton in 1916 and began some
reconstruction to the old home, resuming control over the remaining Kater
properties, using Mt Broughton as his head country base.
Water was, and is still supplied by seven wells, three tanks and town water,
some still pumped by three windmills on the property.
Sir Norman Kater died in 1965 in his nineties, and the property with the
4,000 acres was sold to Mr Chittic who, being interested only in the land,
closed the house and grounds which quickly fell into disrepair.
Subsequent owners used only the property or parts of the residence until 1984
when restoration and renovation work was commenced by Mr & Mrs O'Reilly.
Since then accommodation and conference facilities have been provided and the
property functions as a country house resort hotel.
