Statement of significance:

The stone and wrought iron palisade fence at the corner of Vaucluse and Carrara Roads has historic significance as the remnants of the estate of the earlier mansion named 'The Hermitage'. Dating from the late 19th to early 20th Century this fence formed the original boundary to 'The Hermitage'. The remains of the fence has aesthetic and social significance for its association with this early period of development in the Vaucluse district and as an indicator of the boundaries of the earlier estate.

Description

Builder/Maker: Unknown
Physical description: The fence originally formed the boundary to The Hermitage, and runs along Vaucluse and Carrara Roads. Fence has rock cut sandstone base and piers, and rock cut capping stones. Piers are approximately four metres apart, wrought iron palisade infill has been painted. Evidence of new cement mortar to joints. sandstone base is cracking in sections. Paintwork is flaking and sections are badly rusting. A section of the palisade to Carrara Road appear recently painted. Modifications and dates: Generally in fair condition. There is evidence of new cement mortar to joints, and cracking to the sandstone base in two sections. Paintwork to the palisade is flaking and sections are badly rusting. A section to Carrara Road appears recently painted, and in good condition.

History

Historical notes: The site formed part of the original grant to William Charles Wentworth in 1838. This stone and wrought iron palisade fence originally formed part of the former property of The Hermitage. Their date of origin is unknown. The first record of the property is in the Sands for 1915, with the McCathie family in residence. The property transferred to Kate Edith McCathie in 1929. Subdivision of the land occurred in 1929, Lot 1 being the site of The Hermitage, Lots 2 and 3 to the street transferred to husband David H. McCathie and Jack. H. McCathie. David H. McCathie was still the registered proprietor of the property in 1960.

Recommended management:
