Statement of significance:

A good representative hotel from the early 1940s, designed by a prominent hotel architect, which has retained much original fabric. It is an important townscape item, and should be retained in its present condition. It forms an aesthetic complement to the Long Jetty Hotel, erected at around the same time. Although is of representative significance on a state basis, it has rare local significance aesthetically. It has stylistic links to the Long Jetty Hotel.

History

Historical notes: Tooths and Company saw fit to build a modern hotel (The Lakes) in The Entrance in 1941. This was an interesting decision as there was already a very successful hotel operating in town.

It was during the height of World War 2 and building activity was depleted. It was a major project to take place in such a small town.

Obviously Tooth and Company could see that The Entrance was quickly becoming a dominant tourist destination.

Assessment of significance

SHR Criteria a)
[Historical significance]
The hotel reflects the change in function of local hotels to correspond with an increased permanent population, following the 20's and 30's tourist destination promotions - there is an increase in bar space and a decrease in upper floor accommodation.
SHR Criteria c)
[Aesthetic significance]
This hotel is typical of the quality and design of its contemporaries in the area. It is a forerunner to the mid 20th Century decades of smaller scale, recreationally-focused hotels, which provide a range of recreational spaces, and has local significance.
SHR Criteria d)
[Social significance]
It has been identified with the youth of generations of visitors and residents.
