Statement of significance:

The 1887 Railway Station and Station master's cottage marks the most significant change to Wyong since settlement and the site retains the distinctive original features and character

Description

Designer/Maker: Public Works Department
Physical description: ARTEFACTS: collection of small per-way machines in station area
Brick single storey 19th Century railway station complex, with corrugated iron cladding to roof. Station retains original chimneys. Ridge of roof runs the length of the building, and has gabled ends. Roof is bisected by prominent decorated gable over entry. Covered verandahs extend over platform and forecourt.
Modifications and dates: Entry from Railway Square modified. Later additions to southern end. Recent overbridge incorporating lifts to platform.

History

Historical notes: Wyong Station was opened in 1887.

However, it was the completion of the Sydney to Newcastle railway in 1889 passing through Wyong, which really started significant expansion and development in the area. The railway enabled the growth of the timber industry with an immense demand for railway sleepers and the transportation to ship it.

This is Wyong's most significant building. It represents the start of the region's capacity to export in quantity, and to communicate much more effectively with Sydney.
