Description

Physical description: The present boatshed is a late twentieth century structure replacing the boatshed identified in the Parramatta River Heritage Study of May 1985 by Fox and Associates.

The building is nestled within the mangroves to the foreshore, but is faced by a large jetty with twin pontoons which clearly mark its location. This attractive site is an important riverside element representing the intense recreational use of the river in the early 20th century.
Further information: Thematic Context: The River for Recreation.
Current use: Rowing shed
Former use: Rowing shed

History

Historical notes: In 1893 the first Public Schools Regatta was held over a course from Ryde Bridge to Cabarita Ferry Wharf. In 1935 crowded conditions resulted in the transfer of the race to the Nepean, but some of the competing schools have maintained the boat sheds erected in the early part of the century and still use the Parramatta River as a training course.

A new boatshed was constructed in the late twentieth century, replacing the earlier boatshed
