Description


Designer/Maker:	James Barnet (1881) and Walter Liberty Vernon
Physical description:	Single storey sandstone structure with hipped slate roof built along and outside the wall between Wards 17 and 18 and the Cypress Gove. Includes arched tower structure at the southern end of the building. Has low wide ventilating lantern and large chimney stack, suggesting building was used as a kitchen. Most recently used for pottery.

History

Historical notes:

Shown in 1885 plan as Stores. The building was probably constructed in 1881 associated with the Hill Branch. The building in 1908 was extended with the removal of the angled northern wall and altered to the plan that is seen today. This work included a boiler house with coke, wood and coal storage, an oven, a kitchen, scullery and vegetables store. The chimney is associated with this use. By 1932 the building had been converted to a Dormitory. It was described as one storey, stone walls and slated roof. By 1969 the role of the building had altered to Occupational Therapy.
Earlier building took its present form in 1908 when new openings were made and openings infilled, a new roof was installed with exposed rafters, a roof lantern and chimney were constructed. Roof repaired c.1990.
