Statement of significance:

Bogie Flat Wagon E 20756 has heritage significance. The introduction of the flat wagon represented a major step in rail freight transportation in NSW, and E 20756 is an early example of a bogie flat car, and is possibly the oldest bogie flat wagon in NSW. The wagon is significant as an example of an American style construction, including the bogie design, and retains all its original riveted construction. The wagon is now considered rare because of its original state. It has had a water gin mounted on it but currently removed. The flat wagon is considered significant with or without the accompanying water gin.

Description

Physical description: EXTERNAL
Flat bolster wagon E 20756 is 13.7m long and has a central riveted underframe. There are adjustable underframe truss rods on each side and lashing eyes along the side and end frames for tying down tarpaulins. The wagon has had a riveted water gin attached but this is currently removed and stored nearby. The wagon has timber bolsters. Bogies are of the early riveted arch bar steel type.

EXTERNAL CONDITION
Generally, this wagon is in moderate condition. The side gunwales are corroded, whilst there are small areas of corrosion in the top deck plates. Tyres are worn down to the mark. Chains are broken. Timber bolsters require replacement..

Historical notes: The history of this wagon is unknown and is thought to be pre 1930s construction. The style of construction is American in style including the bogie design. The wagon is now considered rare because of its original state.
