Statement of significance:


	Gunning station group is one of the best surviving examples of a small late Victorian country station complex with elements from the opening of the line in 1875 (when it was terminus for a year) through to 1913 when the last building on the site was added. It clearly demonstrates the changes from single track to double track operation in 1915 with addition of a second platform and more complex signalling arrangements. It exhibits a confidence in railway building and its importance in the development of the country by the scale of the buildings, particularly the station masters residence. It presents as a reasonably intact site with all of the major elements still evident. The original station building was an early proto-type of standardised design in station buildings.

Historical notes:

Following the completion of the first railway from Sydney to Parramatta Junction (Granville) in 1855, proposals for the first railways to the rest of NSW were driven by pastoral communities seeking improved transport for their produce from the inland centres such as Goulburn, Bathurst, Singleton and Musellbrook. When John Whitton arrived in Sydney in 1856 to take up his position as Engineer-in-Chief of the NSW Railways, 'he understood his job was to plan the extensions which would take the infant railway into the interior of Australia. At that time only the railway from Sydney to Liverpool was open, just 21 miles (34km) in length'. It wasn't until 1860 that definite plans were made to extend the Great Southern Line to Picton, with an extension to Goulburn in 1869 (Lee, 2000, 98).

By 1867 the Main Southern Line had reached Moss Vale, continuing to Marulan in 1868 and opened to Goulburn in 1869. In April 1873 John Sutherland, Minister for Public Works, set out a policy to complete 'the main trunk railways', both the Main Southern Line to Albury and the Western trunk route to Bourke on the Darling River were responses to the threat that wool and other produce from the Riverina and the west of NSW would be diverted to Melbourne via river boats and teh Victorian railway to Echuca on the Murray River, which opened in 1864 (McKillop, 2009).

The construction contract for the Goulburn to Yass (Junction) section was awarded to A. & R. Amos and A. Kerr on 20/5/1874 with the line opening to Gunning on 9/11/1875. The original arrangement at Gunning included a loop on the Up side, a goods siding behind the loop, and a platform on the Down side of the single main line. Construction of the 91m station platform was let to a D. Williams and of the station building and goods shed to F. Horn, on 6/8/1875 (Forsyth, 1989, 2009).

It is likely that the original station building was completed before or soon after the opening of the Goulburn-Gunning section of the Main Southern Line in 11/1875. The building was the first application of a distinctive NSW station design, approved by John Whitton in 1874. It stands as a simple brick rectangular structure, with an awning and detached toilet block to assist in manging unpleasant odours. In later decades of the 19th century, this design became know as the 'standard roadside station', though in practice there were many variations between individual stations (Forsyth, 1989). This was an early prototype of later standard station designs (Hopman, 2022, (2)).

The station was first reported as 'opening' by the 'Sydney Mail and NSW Advertiser' on 6/11/1875 (Hopman, 2022 (2)).

In c.1876 a two-storey Station Master's residence was constructed within the station precinct, which included a ground floor bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and laundry, three additiona bedrooms on the first floor, and a double-storey front verandah. Other early or original structures (including those reolcated from or to other locations) included sheep yards, enginmen's rest house (moved to Bowrning in 1876), goods office (moved to Goulburn in 1878), platform lengthenining, a new ladies' toilet within the main station building (1889) and station interlocking (1891)(Forsyth, 1989).

The (Gunning) Station officially opened in 1900 when Gunning was a thriving rural community... The day was a great success - except for the official luncheon. A newspaper report claimed Mr Shipway of Yass provided the lunch 'in excellent style' but 'a boisterous westerly wind, which blew a perfect gale' blew down the tent that housed the food... VIPs had to brave the elements as they at outside, toasting each other and absent friends. On opening day, the first train reached Gunning at about 1pm and a band even struck up the national anthem (Hopman, 2022, (2)).

Extant structures within the yard clearly demonstrate the change from single track to double track operation in 1915 with the addition of a second platform and more complex signalling arrangements. The site also reveals the importance placed on railway development in country NSW in the late 19th century, as evidenced by the scale of extant buildings at Gunning. The original station building is also significant as an example of an early, albeit altered, prototype for a standardised design of station buildings (LEP, 2012).

The line was duplicated from Cullerin on 24/10/1915, and in preparation for this, a new platform was built at Guninng on the Up side in c1913, and a timber waiting shed was provided. In the same year, a timber signal box was built on the original platform. Plans from this period also indicate the existence of a small Out-of shed adjacent to the original footbridge, although its exact date of construction is not known.

Later additions and modifications to the precinct included installation of a 10-tonne yard crane (1919), and introduction of a wool loading dump (1924). A coal stage appears in early station diagrams and may have been located in the yard until 1920 (Forsyth, 1989).

In its heyday, Gunning was a centre for the growing and nation-wide transportation of wool. Closing the station buildings put paid to an important part of Southern Tablelands history (Hopman, 2022 (2)). The station building closed on 24 November 1989 (SRA).

When Gunning Railway Station was in its prime, it connected people. They might have been coming through from Sydney or back to Melbourne, or to one of the many tiny towns in between Today it sees little traffic, except for daily XPT services, but it is about to reconnect with the people of Gunning. It is about to become the town's artistic and cultural hub. Connect@Gunning Station will be the new home for the existing thriving arts community, for performances, heritage displays, workshops, meetings - according to one of the project organisers, exec.director of Southern Tablelands Arts (STA), Rose Marin. STA is working with Transport for NSW and the people of Gunning on this project. "We had already installed 3 public artworks in stations at Goulburn, Mittagong and Moss Vale, so we had an ongoing relationship with Transport for NSW - they knew we were solid" Ms Marin said. Ms Marin said some old railway stations are already being used as community centres or artistic hubs in NSW, including one at Blayney in central-west NSW. She added TfNSW was leading the project to restore the Gunning buildings for their new life, with restoration work expected to be completed by May this year. The Gunning and District Historical Society are looking at setting up displays to tell the history of the station. The Gunning Arts Festival will stage the inaugural exhibition at the station, 'SnapWrite' a photo exhibition featuring works of local photographers (Hopman, 2022 (1)).

TfNSW have called for community memories, memorabilia and recollections about the railway station's history, as they work to make it a new community hub. Andrew Killingsworht of TfNSW said all the station's buildings would be brought back to life through the project, from the stationmaster's office to the 'ladies only' waiting room with its adjacent 'little room'. Plans include attaching a front verandah to the building after finding the original 1875 plans in the NSW Railway Arrchives (Hopman, 2022 (2)).
