Statement of significance:

Armidale has one of the finest groups of station buildings and residences from the boom period of railway construction which demonstrate the quality of buildings constructed and the importance attached to railway development at major settlements. The station building and SM residence are very significant as major civic buildings and townscape elements in the city. This is reinforced by the size of the railway forecourt area. The station building is a particularly fine station structure with excellent detailing and proportion which apart from some minor later additions is in good condition.
The gatekeeper's cottages are good representative examples of many similar structures, no longer in use, which are located along sections of line developed during the 1880's.

History

Historical notes: Construction of the Station began in 1882, but was still incomplete when the Station opened in February of 1883.

The Station was contracted to Edmund Lonsdale, who often won local public works contracts in the Armidale area. In this case he underestimated the costs and lost money on the Station construction.
