Statement of significance:


	Stuart Town is one of the best third class country stations on the NSW railway system. The station building is of high quality with good detail and the retention of a very interesting entrance porch and the setting retains ancillary buildings, signs and platform with a good example of a typical early gatehouse that were seen throughout NSW. With Wellington this station is an important reminder of the early line through the area which showed confidence and pride in railway construction by the substantial quality of the buildings not seen on the later lines that developed.

Physical description:	BUILDINGS Station building - type 4, brick third class, 1880, HS Residence - gatehouse, type 5,brick pyramid roof central chimney, 1880 Out of shed Lamp room/WC (Longworth, 2012, 10) (since, dem.: see Ryan, 2021). Physical condition and/or Archaeological potential:	The exterior of the station building is reasonable well maintained and appears to be weather proof as the roofing and rainwater goods are in good condition. There is some minor fabric deterioration that should be assessed and addressed. Though the interior of the station building is in a state of neglect through disuse, there appears to be no adverse impacts from the weather, damp, pests or other inhabitants. The station is still part of the operational network with a train stopping there once per day (31/8/2016, OEH inspection).
Modifications and dates:	An electricity sub-station has been constructed on the site which appears to be a relatively recent addition to the site or at least post-March 2008 (see image from Google Maps). This structure is not included in the SHR listing's description (31/8/2016, OEH inspection). Lamp Room demolished at some stage. 2019-21: 140th anniversary (in 6/2020) celebrated in 6/2021 with opening of new artwork, including three dimensional expression with poetry inscribed in stone, historic and visual elements, interpreting the lost Lamp Room and the importance of the station to the town and district (Ryan, 2021).

Historical notes:

Ironbark, later Stuart Town:
There are numerous old mines on the 1000-acre town common which can be accessed by crossing the railway line from town. Splitter's Gully, at the southern end of town, in the wooded area of the common, was the richest part of the reef.

Stuart Town (like Mookerawa) sprang up when a goldrush was sparked in the 1870s, although it is claimed that the gold was first found in the 1840s by a shepherd who did not know what he had.

The settlement was originally known as Ironbark, after the trees in the area. As such, it is the 'Ironbark' mentioned in 'Banjo' Paterson's well-known poem, 'The Man from Ironbark'.

It has been claimed that there were as many as 6000 persons working the local fields at the peak of activities, though this may well be an exaggeration. At any rate it is clear that they were of very mixed origins, including many Chinese. While the Europeans worked individually or in small groups the Chinese worked in units numbering in the hundreds which consisted of a large extended family and friends. They worked in shifts and built water races which ran for kilometres to supply water for washing.

Reef mining was also extensively conducted though water-logging defeated many, as the effort of clearing tunnels by bucket was so exhausting and slow. After its retrieval the ore was crushed in a stamper battery. The gold was retained on mercury-coated copper plates.

By 1880 there were four hotels in existence, with another at Mookerawa. The first gold dredging in NSW was allegedly carried out here in 1899. Most mining had ceased in 1914 although some dredging continued until 1958. Reef and alluvial activities retrieved 4 metric tonnes of gold between 1875 and 1914. In the early days an ounce (28.3 g) of gold was worth three times an average weekly wage. The riches attracted a number of bushrangers. Ben Hall and his associates robbed a wine shanty at Mookerawa at one point. The well-known NSW Premier, Robert Askin, was born at Stuart Town in 1901.

Ionrbark (later, Stuart Town) Railway Station:
Station building, Residence, gatehouse, Out of shed, Lamp room/WC, Platform and Dock were built in 1880 (Longworth). The station opened on 1 June 1880, beginning its life as Ironbark Railway, until a name change in 1889. The station celebrated its 140th birthday in 2020. To commemorate the contribution of the railway station to the town, a public art work was commissioned by a division of NSW Trainlink via the Orana Arts and was awarded to local Stuart Town visual artist, Tim Winters. It was intnded this function be part of the Stuart Town Easter 2020 celebrations, then the October 2020 Man from Ironbark Festival, organised by the Stuart Town Action Group. There plans for the station to be open and share joint celebrations involving the nearbly old Railway Hotel, now an arts and craft centre, also 140 years old. COVID-19 restrictions meant the celebrations did not go ahead, until Easter 2021...With fears of COVID-19 reappearing, a decision was made for the official opening ot Tim Winter's 'On the Night Train' and new artwork by Louise Austin to be held on June 23 2021. The event was restricted to a small group of involved locals and railway staff. Pam Gough of Stuart Town said NSW TrainLink representatives stressed the importance of the western line from Sydney to Dubbo as the main way freight, goods and post were transported to and from central and western NSW in earlier days and revealed that the post used to be sorted on the night train. 'Things changed as regular train services wound down during the 1970s and 1980s' she said. 'The local community successfully lobbied to retain the railway station because of its heritage and its state significance, being a fine example of a Victorian railway station building and one of the best examples of a third-class country station building on the NSW Railway system...(Ryan, 2021).

Also taken into account was the station's value to the town with the daily XPT service to Wellington / Dubbo and Orange / Sydney. Tim Winters told assembled guests he has a photo of the old lamp room that housed kerosene lanterns and he wanted to incorporate that history of the building into his artwork, to design a ghost of the old building. He sought to reinterpret the demolished building into a three-dimensional expression combining poetry, history and visual elements. The artist chose Henry Lawson's poem 'On the Night Train' because of the sense of loneliness, darkness and mystery involved with the lamp room and night trains, and his mate (and expert stone-mason-sculptor) Ian Marr inscribed the poem into stone at the end of the arched work which ties it all together. Wellington graphic designer Louise Austin's artwork design represents the significance of the station as an important meeting place where people, railway lines and roads meet (Ryan, 2021). A tree has been planted on the site, in addition to installing an interpretative sign (Stuart Read, from photos in ibid, 2021).
