Statement of significance:

The hotel, dating from the 1850s with a 1880s verandah and 1912 architect-designed accommodation wing, is believed to be the oldest public hotel in Albury.

Early commercial response to the railway. Good example of late colonial style country hotel (LEP, 2000).

Description

Modifications and dates: c.1880s: Two storey front verandah constructed with timber floors and cast iron fretwork.
C.1912: Two storey rear accommodation wing constructed, architect-designed.
C.1950s: Ground floor windows replaced with P&O style fenestration and concrete awning.
2003-2005: Unsympathetic prior alterations to the building interiors removed, such as suspended ceilings, exposing original ceiling heights and plaster detailing.

History

Historical notes: The hotel is believed to have been constructed in c.1854, forming the oldest surviving public hotel in Albury.

I, the Hon James Griffin MP, Minister for Environment and Heritage, pursuant to subsection 57(2) of the Heritage Act 1977, on the recommendation of the Heritage Council of New South Wales do by this Order, effective at the time of publication in the New South Wales Government Gazette:

1. revoke the order made on 9 November 2020 and published in the Government Gazette Number 318 of 13 November 2020; and

2. grant the exemptions from subsection 57(1) of the Heritage Act 1977 that are described in the attached Schedule.
