Statement of significance:


	Nant Gwylan, built circa 1905 by John Peat, a Camden bricklayer of note, is an intact Edwardian house and outbuilding set in a cottage garden of the same period. Occupied for more than 90 years by the Davies family, the garden has been little altered from its inception until recent times, while the house has organically evolved over time with pavilion additions and enclosed verandas. Long-time custodian of the house and garden, Miss Llewella Davies, OAM was recognised for her services to the Camden community with a key to the town in 1999. Nant Gwylan maintains a visual relationship with the farmland lying opposite, which was associated with the Davies family from 1908 to 2000, and was donated to the town through the will of Miss Davies (Clive Lucas, Stapleton & Partners, 2004)

Physical description:	Nant Gwylan faces onto Exeter Street, on the north-western perimeter of the town of Camden, and overlooks (its owner) Miss (Louella) Davies' farm and the Nepean River. It is bounded on western, southern and eastern sides by Camden High School, and on the north by Exeter Street (McSwan et al, 1985, iv). A brick federation style (c.1903) house with extensive gardens of the period. Both the house and the garden are in their original form. The property has remained in the ownership of the one family for most of this century (LEP, 2010). The original house consisted of four rooms, which form the central part of the present house (McSwan et al, 1985). Mr Davies laid out the Federation style garden c.1911, however some of the trees date from before this time (the large evergreen magnolia or bull bay (M. grandiflora), the jacaranda (J. mimosifolia) near the house and the kaki or persimmon tree (Diospyros kaki cv.). The bricks used for paving between the planting beds are sandstock bricks obtained from a cottage which was demolished nearby. The original bricks are still present. The sweet Osmanthus (O. fragrans) at the top of the driveway dates from c.1930. The local priest's house had an Osmanthus in its front garden - the only one in the area. The Davies sent to Martin's nursery in Hazelwood to obtain one, and then sent a cutting to Melbourne. Eventually a specimen was obtained (through Melbourne) from Bali. The tree was originally located in the centre of a planting bed, but is now on the edge of the driveway due to a realignment and reduction of the beds for the construction of a circular carriageway, by Miss Davies, in the 1940s. The (turning/carriage) circle, which is wide enough to accommodate two horses and a carriage, was put in for people calling on Miss Davies' mother (the ladies in the area had certain 'visiting days', in the English tradition)(McSwan et al, 1985). Significant trees in the garden include hackberry (Celtis occidentalis), evergreen magnolia or bull bay (as above), sweet osmanthus (as above), hoop pine (Araucaria cunninghamii), sweet bay or bay laurel (Laurus nobilis), Irish or Mediterranean strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo), jacarandas (J. mimosifolia), Lombardy poplars (Populus nigra 'Italica') and burrawangs (cycads) (Macrozamia communis). Fruit trees include loquat (Eriobotrya japonica), mulberry (Morus alba). Weedy tree species include Southern nettle trees (Celtis australis), wild or African olive (Olea europaea var. cuspidata), and large-leaved privet (Ligustrum lucidum)(Camden Significant Tree & Vegetated Landscape Study, 1993, 25). The house was extended c.1950, this including one bedroom and the semi-enclosed verandahs, built around the existing jacaranda. The rose garden was established by Mr Davies and extended, from time to time. It has been reduced since his death, although there are still many roses throughout the garden. The two semi-circular brick edges near the jacaranda at the front of the garden are the remains of two extensions of the rose garden (McSwan et al, 1985). The cherry guava (Psidium cattleyanum) is one of the only ones in NSW which has been allowed to grow to this (tree) size (McSwan et al, 1985). Originally a very formal Federation garden, Nant Gwylan has today (1985) taken on a more informal character, and has become (in some respects) almost typical, due to the large area of dense canopy, the ferns and the exotic plants. A list of plant species in the garden in 1985 is an appendix to McSwan et al's report (McSwan et al, 1985). While it is outside the SHR-listed curtilage, the former Davies farmland across the street was originally a 52 hectare dairy farm, that was bequeathed by Miss Llewella Davies to Camden Council for the community. It has become the Camden Town Farm, an item separately listed on Camden LEP as a heritage item. It uses sustainable farming practices by a volunteer committee and remains a working farm, grazing dairy and beef cattle and growing lucerne. Various activities take place including produce markets, a community garden and events including Harmony Day, fishing competitions, open days and more (Chris Patterson, MP for Camden, letter, 2013).

Historical notes:

The area is home to the Tharawal and Gundungurra people (Robinson, 2008).

Camden & the Cow Pastures:
The area is associated with the early history of the colony of New South Wales. Governor Hunter named it The Cowpastures after cattle which had strayed from the Farm Cove settlement were discovered there in 1795. Due to the early European settlers, namely the Macarthurs, who established flourishing wool, wine and wheat industries here, the area is said to be 'the birthplace of the nation's wealth' (Robinson, 2008).

In the early 1840s, Camden farmers turned their attention to wheat growing. Many sowed large areas to cash in on the high prices paid for the local flour which had a good reputation in the Sydney market. Unfortunately rust appeared in the crops in 1861 and 1863 and the industry was ruined along with many farmers (Robinson, 2008).

In the 1880s dairy farming became the main industry in the area. GA Porter was the first farmer to send milk to Sydney, from his property Corstorphine, on 6 March 1883. Farms have started to disappear however, due to the pressures of high production costs, milk quotas and competition with dairy companies, and also attractive offers from land developers (Robinson, 2008).

Nant Gwylan:

In the mid-1970s, the CSIRO began using Nant Gwylan's fruit trees for fruit fly research. This is still continuing today (1985). The cherry guava (Psidium cattleyanum) is one of the only ones in NSW which has been allowed to grow to this size, as they are particularly susceptible to fruit fly, although Miss Davies' specimen does not appear to have any trouble (McSwan et al, 1985).

Nant Gwylan maintains a visual relationship with the farmland lying opposite, which was associated with the Davies family from 1908 to 2000, and was donated to the town through the will of Miss Davies (CLSP, 2004)

Its garden is of greater significance than house. Its owner, until recently was Miss E. A. Davies, a long-time Camden resident and local leader. She was the granddaughter of Richardson, of real estate company Richardson & Wrench (LEP, 2010).

In 2019 Camden Council unveiled a new 2.35km long Miss Llewella Davies Pioneer Walkway, offering fantastic views of St. John's Anglican Church, the Chinese Washing Wells, the Nepean River and Macquarie (Grove) House. Camden Mayor Theresa Fedeli said the walkway was named in honour of one of Camden's most colourful identities. 'The Camden Town Farm was bequeathed to Camden Council by Miss Llewella Davies, who wanted the property to be left to the community for their benefit and enjoyment', Cr. Fedeli said. 'She was an energetic member of the Camden community and this walkway is a key part of honouring her.' (Osborne, 2019).

57(2)	Exemption to allow work	Standard Exemptions	HERITAGE ACT 1977 ORDER UNDER SECTION 57(2) TO GRANT STANDARD EXEMPTIONS FROM APPROVAL I, Penny Sharpe, the Minister for Heritage, on the recommendation of the Heritage Council of New South Wales and under section 57(2) of the Heritage Act 1977: revoke the order made on 2 June 2022 and published in the Government Gazette Number 262 of 17 June 2022; and grant an exemption from section 57(1) of the Act in respect of the engaging in or carrying out the class of activities described in clause 2 Schedule A in such circumstances specified by the relevant standards in clause 2 Schedule A and General Conditions in clause 3 Schedule A. This Order takes effect on the date it is published in the NSW Government Gazette.
