Description

Designer/Maker: Robert Anderson
Builder/Maker: Robert Anderson
Construction years: 1863-
Physical description: Grounds and garden:
The complex is located in 120 acres of relatively intact pastoral setting on the shores of Coila Lake, 14km south of Moruya. It forms a rural oasis in this area, since Tuross Heads and Kyla Park to the south and Moruya to the north have considerable coastal development (RNI; from NTA).

The main house is set among gardens and trees and with extensive views of ocean and (Coila) lake and it was for many years a showpiece of the district (RNI, from NTA). Extensive lawns, stone-paved paths around house. Monterey cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa trees)(Stuart Read, observation).

Picket fence (LEP, 2012).

Homestead group:
The survival of the numerous building comprising this homestead and the complete lack of modern modifications makes this a unique complex for this region. The homestead complex is a series of hipped roofed pavilions around a central courtyard (with well) built in stages, with the eastern and southern wings apparently the first buildings (RNI, from NTA).

Victorian Georgian style. Timber framed with timber boards to walls. Corrugated iron roof. Brick chimneys. Set on ironbark piers with large timber verandah surrounding house. Interior walls with lathe and plaster and 12 foot high ceilings. Cedar doors, skirting and window frames (interiors not inspected, from National Trust listing card). Awning hoods to western elevation windows (LEP, 2012).

Eventually the house had ten bedrooms, parlour, dining room, breakfast room, kitchen, laundry, bathroom and office. The four large fireplaces are made of hand-made bricks (RNI, from NTA).

Internal paved courtyard (LEP, 2012).

Outbuildings:
Several timber farm buildings were added in later years including hay barn, shearing shed, stables with lofts, cow bails and cheese factory and manager's cottage is also included in the listing (RNI, from NTA).

Slab Timber Shed
Vertical slab shed, corrugated iron roof, on stumps, restored (www.bingiebuilders.com.au/services/renovations-and-hardwood-creations/).

Two storey shed:
Re-clad in sections and straightened/braced (ibid).

Dairy:
under-pinned and maintained for studio use (ibid).

Woolshed:
Timber.
Modifications and dates: Restored by the present owner - extensive restumping and plaster work repair, roofing repairs and minor floor plan alterations joining a small kitchen to an adjoining sitting room. A covered entry added to front door and courtyard landing and entry to an internal courtyard (www.bingiebuilders.com.au/services/renovations-and-hardwood-creations/).
Further information: Lake Coila, On The Shores Of, 14km South East Of Moruya (NTA, 1984).
Current use: farm and residence
Former use: Aboriginal land, farm settlement and residences

History

Historical notes: To manage his estates at Bergalia, the Hon. Henry Clarke MP in 1862 brought out from Ireland his nephew, Robert Anderson. Robert Anderson became one of the most prominent residents of the district for, as well as proving a most capable farmer, he served as a Justice of the Peace, Magistrate, member of the Land Board, member of the Licencing Board, Chairman of the Pastures Protection Board and a member of the School Board (LEP, 2012).

In 1863 Anderson purchased "Lakeview" on the shores of Coila Lake, about eight miles south-east of Moruya. Here he built his home on his original 120 acres selection. His holding was to increase later to over 1300 acres. Robertson Anderson was a master carpenter and constructed his own home and outbuildings. The original buiding started with the kitchen area on the southern side and the bedroom area on the eastern side. Water was drawn by a hand pump from an underground tank in the central courtyard. Eventually the house consisted of ten bedrooms (there were twelve children in the family), parlour, dining room, breakfast room, kitchen, laundry, bathroom, office; in all about twenty two rooms. The construction was typical timber-framed weatherboard exterior, set on ironbark piers, with large verandahs all around and a very high pitched iron hip roof. The interior walls were lathe and plaster, with twelve foot high ceilings and cedar doors, skirtings and window frames. Much of the timber was pit-sawn, a method of the day, and the nails were hand made. The four large open fireplaces were built of hand-made clay bricks. Lighting was with candles and oil lamps (LEP, 2012).

Set among pretty gardens and trees with extensive views of the ocean and the lake, the house was a showpiece of the district for many years. At the height of its greatest activity, "Lakeview" supported up to twenty people; the Anderson family as well as a cheesemaker, cattleman, ploughman, gardener, another employed family who lived in a separate cottage, casual farm help and kitchen help. Many farm buildings were erected over the years. The haybarn with its twenty-foot high posts, shearing shed, stables with overhead lofts, cow-bails and cheese factory are still to be seen and are in use (LEP, 2012).

Restored by the present owner - extensive restumping and plaster work repair, roofing repairs and minor floor plan alterations joining a small kitchen to an adjoining sitting room. A covered entry added to front door and courtyard landing and entry to an internal courtyard (www.bingiebuilders.com.au/services/renovations-and-hardwood-creations/).

In 2021 $150,000 of grant funding will support reconstruction, replacement and repairs to the timber farm buildings, to improve their stability, with as little change as possible to the unique main house, dairy, woolshed and other structures (Heritage NSW, 5/2021).
