Construction years:	1871-1911
Physical description:	The first Battery was constructed in 1871 to the design of James Barnet, colonial architect. The Fort was a strategic site which received many additions until 1911. The whole is linked by underground tunnels, ancillary rooms and magazines. There is also an interesting underground power room with iron columns (AHC)

History

Historical notes:

Sydney Harbour Federation Trust runs North Head Sanctuary, which includes the former School of Artillery. The Trust was established in 2001 by the federal government under Prime Minister John Howard to be custodian of key Commonwealth-owned harbourside heritage sites then being vacated by the army and navy, and to conserve and preserve them for future generations. In October 2019 the federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley announced an independent review of the Trust with broad terms. The Act under which the Trust was created is due to wind down the Trust by 2033 with the sites to be restored and handed over to the NSW government. The Trust wishes to become a permanent body and has ambitions to expand to other historic sites around the harbour (Snow, 2019).
