Statement of significance:


	The vent and cottage are an increasingly rare survivor of an excellent example of the brick and stone masons craft associated with Sydney Water in the early part of the 20th century. It is one of a handful of like structures in the Sydney Water System, and in comparison to other similar examples is of State significance. It is a visual landmark in the cultural landscape of the local area.

Physical description:	The structure comprises a brick and terracotta detailed vent shaft with rendered base and cap some 15 metres in height. With the adjoining Queen Anne Revival style workers cottage, the vent is integral to the design of the place as it forms part of the front fence in brick and stone detailing with wrought iron gates and fence pickets. Construction details are substantially intact. The cottage comprises a single storey detached dwelling with all original details in generally including: Turned timber verandah posts and verandah detail; Timber joinery; and Marseilles pattern terracotta tiles, all of which appears to be substantially intact. Further original details of the cottage include a rendered and lined ashlar wall to the side lane and rendered label moulds above the window heads. Evidence of shutters via shutter flaps remain but shutters have been removed. The cottage backs on to a rear lane which is fenced by a timber paling fence in fair to poor condition. Relatively new steel straps have been fitted to the shaft for stability which has some impact on the visual asethetics of the shaft, however the quality and detailing of the shaft remains as an excellent example of the brick masons craft complete with entasis. What sets this shaft apart from others is the neo classical terracotta console brackets at the capital of the shaft which is an excellent detail and example of its type. The stone detail on the shaft is inscribed "Metropolitan Board of Water Supply and Sewerage 1900" and is in itself in poor condition continuing to exfoliate. The vent and cottage are located on the corner of a lane, and the vent is a prominent landmark within the local vicinity, particularly to the east along Corunna Road.

Historical notes:

Wangal Country:
Stanmore is the traditional land of the Cadigal Wangal people of the Eora nation. The Cadigal land stretches from South Head, through central Sydney to the area around Petersham and to the south along the Cooks River. Wangal land was located from about present day Birchgrove and ran west along the southern shore of the Parramatta River to Rose Hill near Parramatta. (Marrickville Council. 2015 www.marrickville.nsw.gov.au/en/community/community-development/aboriginal ).

The Cadigal Wangal people were salt water people, skilled at living from the coastal and harbour waters and resources of the Cooks river. Accounts from the memoirs of first fleet officers W Clements and J Saddlier describe seeing Aboriginal people fishing from canoes and others preparing fish on the banks of the cooks river. The existence of several large shell middens at the mouth of the Cooks river and near the many sandstone rock shelters in the escarpment running along the Cooks river, also attests to the skill of the traditional landowners in harvesting the resources of their environs. The traditional people of the area also made use of resources of the woodlands away from the waterways where plants were foraged and kangaroo, birds and possums were hunted. Campsites were most often made near the coast and river especially during the warmer seasons of the year. Movement through the Cadigal Wangal territory was made via regularly used tracks many of which have been adapted as roads for later colonial and modern-day movement around Sydney. (A. Colonial history:
In 1788, Governor Arthur Phillip arrived in Sydney Cove and established the penal colony of NSW. After this the lives of the Cadigal Wangal people changed dramatically. Their traditional food supply was encroached upon by the new settlers and the diseases such as smallpox the Europeans brought with them, severely decimated the local Aboriginal population. (A. The pattern of European dispossession of Aboriginal people from their land accelerated, when in 1792, Governor Phillip received 'Additional Instructions' dated 1789, allowing him to grant land for church and school uses. Church and School and Crown lands which extended to the north eastern corner of the current municipality of Marrickville (Fox and Associates, 1986, Marrickville Heritage Study p. 16).

Further communiques from the British government allowed the granting of land to British Officers in 1792. With the aim of establishing a chain of farms between Sydney and Parramatta, land grants were made along the road to Parramatta. In 1793 Lieutenant Thomas Rowley was granted land, an estate he named Kingston, in the area now known as Newtown, part of Camperdown and part of Stanmore. (C Meader. 2008. Stanmore. www.dictionaryofsydney.org ). It is within the area of this land grant that the NSW AECG office is located.

In 1871 Petersham Municipal Council was incorporated. By 1879 the western railway line was well established and Stanmore gained a railway station providing convenient access to Sydney. The area soon became home to many city workers as well as well-heeled businessmen such as William Paling of Palings Music Store who lived on the corner of Cambridge and Merchant Street, Stanmore and Alexander Stuart, Premier of NSW (1883-1885) who lived in 'The Lodge' which had been constructed by William Paling. Assessment of significance


SHR Criteria a) [Historical significance]	The vent and cottage are tangible evidence of the historical provision of sewerage services to the inner Western Suburbs of Sydney which form part of a much grander sewage system. The vent with the cottage as a couple are rare evidence of the historical values of quality design and facilities for Board workers and the Board itself.
SHR Criteria c) [Aesthetic significance]	A highly visible landmark with rare terracotta detailing. It is a prominent element and one which relates well to its historic streetscape.
SHR Criteria d) [Social significance]	It is likely to be of value to the members of local community as a prominent landmark and for the function it serves in provision of sewerage services for the community.
SHR Criteria e) [Research potential]	An excellent example of brick masons trade in the precision of such detail including entasis of the shaft. The vent shaft plays an important technical role in the provision of fresh air for the system and as such is a highly significant element to the sewer system.
SHR Criteria f) [Rarity]	As a combination of cottage and vent shaft this example is one of a couple in Sydney Water System and in the detail displayed probably unique in NSW. The vent shaft itself is one of a group of like shafts built by the Board at the time which collectively

Recommended management:

Manage the place and its significant components in accordance with the State Owned Heritage Asset Management Guidelines. Where no Conservation Management Plan, Heritage Assessment or Statement of Heritage Impact is in place, or where works are outside the scope existing heritage documentation, assess heritage impacts of proposed works in accordance with Sydney Water Environment Impact Assessment procedures. Undertake a Heritage Assessment and/or Statement of Heritage Impact as required by EIA procedures. Where the item is listed in a Local Environmental Plan Schedule of Heritage items, determine if works are exempt from approval under the LEP provisions. Where works are not exempt, obtain necessary approvals from the local council, in accordance with SWC EIA Guidelines. Undertake archival and photographic recording before major changes, in accordance with Heritage Council guidelines.
